New Computer on the Horizon

I just purchased the first part to my new computer. I am building my computer, one piece at a time. I have a case from an older machine that still fits the newer mother boards so I'm recycling that but everything else will be new.

Part one is the motherboard.
The Asus P5KC Intel P35 Cchipset ATX Form Factor Socket 775

This board is sweet. It supports two types of DDR RAM, has room for 8 SATA drives, 2 IDE drives, 8 USB ports, 2 Fire Wire ports, 1 external SATA, optical output for audio, svideo, network and internal wireless....all on the board! There's lots of room for me in the future to upgrade this computer.

This is the second-most expensive part on the assembly list. Next week is the big one, the processor. This is what I plan on getting.

The Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz.
The Intel Core 2 Quad

This is a quad core processor with each core at 2.4GHz. That means ~9.6GHz overall. My current machine is a singe core 2.4GHz. This will be a four-fold jump for me in processing speed, the biggest jump I've made going to a new machine. I'll be hunting for this when I get my next paycheck.

Building it myself is going to be a lot more cost effective than a complete machine. When I priced things out, a new machine, complete, was going to cost about $2000. By buying everything separately it's going to cost around $750, including the monitor which I already have. We got it with a gift-card given to us when we got our bedroom set. A nice 20" flat screen.
